5/23/07 Update

A few reminders based on recent observations:

(1)  There is no "on-deck" circle in HLL.  The only player allowed out of the dugout during a team's "at bat" is the batter and a pitcher warming up in an approved area.

(2)  Games suspended by the recent rain will only be continued if: (1) the losing team did not get 4 at bats before the rain came, or (2) the game was tied.  If there is only an inning or so to play, the coaches can play it before their next game against each other (if they pay again) or on the same day they both have a game.  The scheduler for HLL will contact the coaches to figure out when and where to finish the game.

(3)  All Star rules, eligibility, etc., will be distributed in the next week or so.  Please refill your Valium prescription now.

(4)  The Smoker is set for June 22at the Hinsdale Community House.  Recall that the proceeds will be split between HLL (for the warning track on the SW field) and the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation.  The HHF donation will go towards paying for new digital mammography machines at Hinsdale Hospital that will greatly aid in early detection of breast cancer.  If you or anyone you know has been touched by breast cancer you will understand how critical early detection is to the prognosis of a breast cancer patient.  Please think about how you can help with the Smoker.  We need a guest speaker, silent auction donations, and lots of sold tickets.

(5)  Please check the lost and found in the umpire room.  We have lots of sweatshirts, mitts, etc., and also two 6YO players in the tubs under in the umpire room.  The 6YO's seem happy, but they will not last long on a diet of slushies, spray candy, and pizza.

Thanks and enjoy the weather.

Steve

All right.  I take it back.  You can make it to the pros out of Hinsdale Little League.  I am very pleased to announce that a Hinsdale Little League alum has finally been drafted to the pros - professional hockey, that is.  Barron Smith, a player on one of HLL's 10YO State Championship Teams, was recently drafted in the 2007 draft by both the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League and the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League.  This is quite an accomplishment for any hockey player, but especially for one that is only a sophomore in high school!  If any one you have seen how hard Barron works, you would know that he deserves it.  All I can say is - he's no cake-eater.

When Barron joins the Steel for the 2007-2008 season he will be the only pro hockey player with hundreds of baseball fans.   Congratulations to Barron and his family.

5/21/07 Update

Unfortunately the rain that came down yesterday at 3:30 PM was bad enough to force a cancellation of all games.  Since these are regular season games there has been a lot of discussion about the issues raised by weather cancellations.  Here are some highlights regarding the issues that have been raised:

If your game was suspended due to rain and the losing team completed its at-bat in the 4th inning, the game is over and the team that was winning won the game.

If your game was suspended and it was tied at the time, or the losing team had not yet completed its at bat in the 4th inning, then the game will be continued from where it left off (down to the pitch count) at a later date.  The coaches can agree on a time (e.g., before their next game) or we will re-schedule  it.

If a game is resumed, it starts from where it left off.

All pitching rules apply.  However, the fact that you are playing in a resumed game is irrelevant.  All that matters under the new rules is pitch count and days of rest.  See Local Rule 12 Note 3.

We are starting to get a lot of requests for re-scheduling games due to vacations, Memorial Day, band concerts and Lolapalooza.  Every team must make every effort to play every game when scheduled.  The call-up rules are there to allow you to weather big events.  Anyone trying to reschedule games does so at their own risk that there may be no umpire and/or that the game may never be played.

Also, if anyone who was at Peirce at 3:45 PM saw two kids that looked suspiciously like my Andrew and William running the bases in the rain and lightning, you were hallucinating.  As the one who harps on everyone else to get their kids into cars during lightning storms I would never be so irresponsible as to forget to take care of my own kids.  Really, never.

Thanks,

Steve

4/20/07 @ 11:00 AM

All fields are open today.

Coaches - The call up list is posted under the League Rules page.

Enjoy the weekend.

Steve

 4/19/07 @ 12:50 PM

Quick update:

(1)  The SE field is closed.  Hopefully open tomorrow.

(2)  The NW and SW fields are open.

(3)  Generalissimo Franciso Franco is still dead.

Long live Mark Buerhle.

Thanks,
Steve

 4/18/07 @ 2:30 PM

The emails should have gone out.  The SE field is still out of service.  The SW and NE fields are OK.

If you have the 7:45 PM games on the SW or NW fields, please exercise some common sense.  If it is too cold (e.g., much below 50 degrees or kids can see their breath), call the game.  We do not care if we have to pay the umps and then send them home.  We do not care if some teams have less pre-season games than others.  We do care if kids get sick and have to miss school.  Any manager or coach of any team has the discretion to say it is just too damn cold for their team to play a pre-season game.

If you do not have baseball pants yet then email Scott at scooterwithfiveboys@msn.com with the size you need.

Thanks,

Steve

 4/17 @ 4:00 PM

You should have received an email, but just in case...

the games on the NE, SE and SW fields today are cancelled.  We should be OK for all but the SE tomorrow.  But watch the web site and your email for confirmation.

Steve

 4/17/07 @ 7:00 AM

Players, Parents and Coaches:

What a wonderful start to the season!  Few practices, almost no games, and construction work on the fields.  Welcome to baseball in Chicago.  Games on the SW and SE fields are cancelled tonight.  There will be an announcement on the NE field later today.

Other quick updates:

-- All fence work should be done by the end of the week.  Watch the web site for updates.

-- If your player needs baseball pants please email Scott Veselik with a size at scooterwithfiveboys@msn.com.  We cannot have another try-on session, so please ask a friend with a similar-sized player for the right size.  This will be the last chance for pants.

-- If you have not paid, please pay.  You do not want your son or daughter kept out of the first game for non-payment.

-- If you have not turned in your Player's birth certificate, please do so.

Thanks,

Steve

 4/16/07 at 3:30 PM

The games on the Northeast Field are now also cancelled.  The field work there that was supposed to be completed is not going to be completed in time.

Coaches - please check this site often over the next few days as the bad news may not be over.

Thanks,

Steve

 To All:

(1)  All games on the Southwest and Southeast fields for Monday 4/16 and Tuesday 4/17 are cancelled.  The bad weather has pushed back the fence work and we do not want games being played with bare posts in the outfields.  We believe the work will be done by Wednesday.  Since these are pre-season games they will not be rescheduled.

(2)  We still have 30-35 players who have not paid for HLL.  That is more than $5000 in fees to HLL and could mean the difference in HLL having financial issues this season.  Your son or daughter will not be allowed to play in any games until the fees are paid.  Please mail a check or email us at info@hinsdalell.org to find out how to pay online.

(3)  Uniform pickup is tonight at Peirce from 4-6PM.  Managers should make sure someone comes to pick up the uniforms and gets them distributed to the kids.

(4)  We have about 10 prospective managers or coaches who have not submitted their info for background checks.  If you are on the field you must be approved. If you take the field before that you will be suspended from coaching.

Thanks,

Steve

All Games this weekend April 14-15 are CANCELLED.  DO NOT USE PIERCE PARK INFELDS THIS WEEKEND.  We are cancelling in order to give the fields a chance to dry out.  DO NOT BE SO SELFISH AS TO THINK THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUR TEAM TO USE THE FIELD TO PRACTICE.  STAY OFF THE FEILDS!!!  Don't forget uniform pickup on Monday 4 -6 Pm at Pierce.

4/11/07 Update

Players, Parents and Coaches:

I would not normally post stuff while on vacation but a few issues have arisen that require attention.  I will be brief (for a number of vacation-related reasons):

(1)  Background Checks

-- A few have not yet complied. Please do so or you cannot coach.  No exceptions.

-- The national background checks have turned up a lot of "hits" - i.e., the identification of many potential coaches as offenders of some sort or another.  So far they are all false positives.  Thank God, because if they weren't then Hinsdale would have the greatest concentration of predators outside of San Quentin (and I am not talking about lawyers like me).  If you receive notice from ChoicePoint that there was a match to your name rest assured that I have the ability to check and make sure that it is not you.  I am required to check the reporting state database and can see more details about the offense, a picture of the offender, etc.  I have not seen a single familiar face - which is good because they are in general really creepy looking.  Many of your are concerned that the false positives will leak and people will start walking on the other side of Washington Street when they see you coming.  The results I receive do not come in either hard or soft copy (which could be spread).  I have a login and password to the ChoicePoint web site and review the results online only.  I am the only one with the login and PW, and I am not copying any of the "hits" or talking about it with anyone.  You need not fear a mistaken identity issue being spread.  People may still walk on the other side of Washington, but it will not be my fault.

(2) Weather

- I hear it has really been horrible and cold.  Please listen to the warnings on the web site and the emails you are getting about field conditions.  if you ruin a field you will not coach again.  It is that simple.

- I have been asked what I think about practicing in 30 or 40 degree weather.  You know what I think...I think you have to be an idiot to make kids catch and hit balls in 30 or 40 degree weather (not to mention when it is also rainy or snowy).  I have a simple rule.  If you want to make your team practice and you are not sure if it is warm enough, then it is not warm enough.  If you need a bright line (and many of you do), here is my bright line - 50 degrees and dry.  Anything much below that and you should show up on the background checks mentioned earlier as some form of abuser.

(3)  Payment

- If you have not paid, please pay before we have to ask.  That is not fun for either party.

(4)  Schedule

- We will work on it and smooth out the weird spots.  Please be patient.

(5)  Rules

- Thanks for the feedback.  They are still a draft but are getting closer.

Steve

Players, Parents and Coaches:

The game schedules for the 2007 season will be posted by the end of the day.  You will see that we agreed with the request of many of you to avoid games on Mother's Day (May 13th).  We also are still trying to work with AYSO by not having games scheduled for 6-9YOs before 11AM on Saturdays.  This means that some teams have rough stretches - i.e., back to back games, 3 games in 4 or 5 days, etc.  We did the best we could to avoid such issues.  But as long as we only have two lighted fields and comply with the other requests, some clumping is unavoidable.

The schedule may not reflect the fact that the first four games (all pre-May 1st) are preseason games.  If not, that will be changed.  But each team plays 4 preseason games and 12 regular season games.  Playoffs start immediately upon the conculsion of the regular season and the season is over by July 4th.

Please review your team's schedule and let us know if you see any obvious issues that must be fixed, which would include:

  • 2 games for the same team on one day
  • 2 games on the same field at the same time
  • 3 games in 3 days
  • More than 16 games, including 4 pre-May 1st and 12 post-May 1st, for any team

Since there are sure to be some changes, these schedules are tentative.  Do not plan vacations, parties, or elective surgery around them until after April 15 when they will be final.

Thanks,

Steve

3/30/07 Update (Background Checks, Game Schedules and HLL Academy)

COACH / MANAGER BACKGROUND CHECK UPDATE

We still have not received complete information from 80 would-be coaches.  You cannot take the field for a practice, meeting, or game until you have been cleared to coach or you will be suspended from coaching.  All those that already submitted their info have been cleared.

Thanks

3/30/07 Update (Background Checks, Game Schedules)

COACH / MANAGER BACKGROUND CHECK UPDATE

In 2007, the Little League Baseball, Inc., regulation regarding coach background checks was made stricter.  In the past, HLL need only conduct a statewide background check in order to meet the rules promulgated by Little League Baseball, Inc.  Now, Hinsdale Little League must conduct a nationwide background check.

To do so, HLL needs the birth date and social security number for each potential coach or manager.  Many of you provided your SSN last season.  As promised, those were destroyed and so we need them again.   They will be destroyed again this season. HLL cannot permit any person to participate with HLL in any manner without a nationwide background check being successfully completed.

In order for you to start practices on time, the background checks must be completed by April 1, 2007.  So, to avoid missing practices please fax, email or call our new Administrative Assistant, Alina Spies, with your DOB and SSN by Wednesday, March 28, 2007.  Alina’s contact information is:

Phone: (630) 654-4209

Fax: (630) 654-4206

Email: aj_spies@hotmail.com

Any coach or manager found participating in HLL activities (team meetings, practices or games) before being approved by HLL will be banned from coaching.

Thank you for your cooperation.  I know this is a pain, but it is critical to the protection of our children.

 3/15/07 Update

6YO League Coaches and Parents:

We are done compiling the 6YO League teams and coaching assignments (click here to see them).  Thanks to everyone that helped pull this together.  Here are a few quick announcements:

  1. There will be a mandatory coaches' meeting on April 2nd at 8pm at Doug Kramer's office, 13 S. Lincoln St, Hinsdale.  All coaches must attend.
  2. There should be no pre-season practices for 6YO teams.  You will soon get information about mandatory "skills and drills" for 6YO Players, coaches and their parents.  That should be the first time the team gets together.  Those sessions are scheduled to start in the last week of April.
  3. The regular season for 6YOs does not start until May 8th.  It is tough enough to play baseball in 45 degree weather, but at 5 or 6YO it can be brutal.

If you have any questions, please contact Doug ASAP at 630-204-3472 or doug.kramer.icic@statefarm.com.

Thanks

3/12/07 Update

Coaches - We have already heard from some eager beavers itching to practice.  Keep one thing in mind - your LLB insurance does not cover you for practices that occur before 4/1/07 or events taking place after the conclusion of HLL's season.  So, if you decide to get the group together it is on your dime.  Personally, I do not think it is worth it since each team (at every level except Majors) likely has at least one player who has difficulty catching moving objects.  Feel free to jump on the fields in April.  A practice schedule for the Peirce fields will be posted in the next week or so.  Until then, enjoy March Madness.

Also, as you talk to your Players and their parents remember that it is your responsibility to:

(1)  Collect payment from those players that have not paid (you will get a list);

(2)  Collect copies of birth certificates for all players and give them to your league VP; and

(3)  Collect waiver letters from all non-Hinsdale residents petitioning to play in Hinsdale.

No Player will be allowed on the field for the first practice game until these issues are settled.

At your team web site you can also email your manager or coach.  If you have any issues, please contact your league VP at the numbers below:

About the 2007 Season of HLL

Hinsdale Little League (HLL) is open to all residents of Hinsdale, Illinois aged 5-14 as of May 1, 2007.  5YOs wishing to play in HLL must be registered for kindergarten at the time of registration. All HLL players will be asked to provide proof of age prior to playing or practicing.  5YOs must provide proof of enrollment in kindergarten prior to being placed on a team (e.g., a letter from the kindergarten).

In 2007 HLL will be composed of the following leagues with placement determined strictly by the age of the Player as of the Little League Baseball cutoff date of May 1st:

6YO League: Open to children aged 5 or 6 before May 1, 2007, the 6YO league stresses fun and sportsmanship and all practices and "games" take place at Robbins Park in Hinsdale.  To be eligible, 5YO players must also be in kindergarten at the time of registration (proof of enrollment will be required).  The 6YO league is a "coach pitch" league using soft balls.  Players, parents, and coaches attend pre-season skills sessions where professional baseball instructors teach everyone some good ways to learn the game of baseball.  While there are "games" there is no score kept and very few rules.  Parents in the 6YO are allowed to form their own teams of 10-15 players and submit them to HLL.  Feel free to pull together your roster and submit it to Doug Kramer at doug.kramer.icic@statefarm.com.  All coaches must be approved by HLL.

7YO League:  In this "machine pitch" league the emphasis is on fun and sportsmanship.  The rules promote throwing, running and fielding and discourage aggressive competition.  Although the pitcher is simply an extra infielder, there is a 42' mound and the bases are 60'.  Pitching machines provide consistent, reliable pitches with soft balls to help batters hone their stroke.  There is no stealing of bases.  Coaches and managers are appointed by HLL and teams are chosen in the March 10th draft.  Practices take place wherever scheduled by the coaches and all games are played at Peirce Park in Hinsdale.

8YO League:  In the 8YO league Players are introduced to batting against live pitching.  The mound is 42' and the bases are 60'.  Limits are placed on the number of batters / inning and there are other rules designed to encourage player development and fun.  For the safety of Players' arms, strict rules related to pitching are enforced.  Coaches and managers are appointed by HLL and teams are chosen in the March 10th draft.  Practices take place wherever scheduled by the coaches and all games are played at Peirce Park in Hinsdale.

9YO League: Players in this league now move up to the full size Little League baseball fields with 46' mounds and 60' bases.  Still the emphasis is on fun and sportsmanship.  Limited stealing is allowed.  For the safety of Players' arms, strict rules related to pitching are enforced.  Coaches and managers are appointed by HLL and teams are chosen in the March 10th draft.  Practices take place wherever scheduled by the coaches and all games are played at Peirce Park in Hinsdale.

Minors:  Consisting of all 10YOs and most 11YOs, the Minors is the largest league in HLL.  Unlimited stealing is allowed and the level of play is relatively high.  But the emphasis is always on fun and sportsmanship.  For the safety of Players' arms, strict rules related to pitching are enforced.  Coaches and managers are appointed by HLL and teams are chosen in the March 10th draft.  Practices take place wherever scheduled by the coaches and all games are played at Peirce Park in Hinsdale.

Majors:  Consisting of ten teams of eleven players, the Majors is highest level of baseball still played at Little League dimensions (46' mounds and 60' bases).  Majors is composed of all 12YOs and enough 11YO's to fill out the teams.  All 11YOs playing in the Majors are chosen by draft of the coaches from the entire pool of available 11YOs.  Unlimited stealing is allowed and the level of play is high.  However, guess what - the emphasis is on fun and sportsmanship!  Coaches and managers are appointed by HLL and teams are chosen in the March 1st Majors draft.  Practices take place wherever scheduled by the coaches and all games are played at Peirce Park in Hinsdale.

Junior League: The JRL is open to all Players aged 13 or 14 on May 1st.  JRL teams are chosen in a draft and then compete against JRL teams from Hinsdale and surrounding communities (e.g., Western Springs, Clarendon Hills, and Burr Ridge).  Players get a taste of the big fields (60'6" mounds and 90' bases) and play by Major League rules (e.g., leadoffs are allowed and balks are called).
